Rational

Young legislators play a vital role in the realization of the emerging strategic development framework in the country. By and large, they are categorized as among the "Hope of the Father land" who possesses the idealism and reservoir of energies and talents that could be used for local development. And being young, they are bound to stay in the mainstream of local governance work for the next ten years or more.

There is a need, therefore, to unite all efforts among young leaders and the various sectors espousing relevant and effective governance, to advance the progressive ideals and visions of the youth and the people in general.

 

The Movement

The National Movement of Young Legislators (NMYL) is a 7,000 strong league of elected young lawmakers, Vice Governors, Vice Mayors, Provincial Board Members, City and Municipal Councilors, Sangguniang Kabataan and Association of Barangay Captains Federation Presidents aged 35 years old and below.

Accredited by the local government league under the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG), it regularly conducts education seminars, leadership trainings, legislative advocacy, as well as the advancement of youth related causes and programs in the fields of education, sports, livelihood, culture and the arts among others.

As an organization it traces it origins to the Metro-Manila Young Councilors' League Founded in 1989 by a group of young political leaders elected during the 1988 elections.

The thrust of NMYL is to work for the advancement of the New Politics and positive values formation, local governance and capability building, national and international solidarity. It is now encouraging more and more youth to enter and participate in the area of politics and governance.

Within the NMYL's confines is born the much-awaited force in Philippine politics- The New Politics of the Youth.

 

Membership

The NMYL is open to all elected and appointed vice governors, vice mayors, councilors, board members and Sangguniang Kabataan Federation Presidents who are between 18-35 years old at the time of their election or at the time of their appointment to office. Their length of stay in the organization will be co-terminus with their tenure of office as members of the provincial board, city and municipal councils.

 

Vision/Mission

Vision - the NMYL envisions an empowered citizenry with a dynamic, progressive, democratic and responsive government towards a just, equitable and suitable development.

Mission - to provide capability building programs, technical resources, policy development and advocacy initiatives for young political leaders in government.
